Oregon has entered wildfire season early due to low snowpack, dry conditions, and warmer-than-average temperatures.
As a precautionary measure, CEC has set over 100 reclosers to enhanced safety settings on various distribution lines in high-risk wildfire areas throughout its 5,300 square miles, including national forests.
The enhanced safety settings will automatically prevent power lines from reenergizing when a foreign object, such as small wildlife, vegetation, or lightning, makes contact. Rapidly deenergizing the power lines helps ensure CEC’s equipment does not contribute to the ignition of a wildfire.
Taking these safety precautions can result in longer and more frequent power outages. Line personnel must visually inspect entire sections of power lines before reenergizing to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the electric system.
While increased outages and their length of time can be inconvenient, the trade-off helps ensure public safety in high-risk areas. We thank members for their understanding and patience when such occurrences arise.
