Did you know hitting an underground power line with a shovel can be as dangerous as contacting an overhead power line? Remember to be safe and call 811 when working on projects like planting trees, digging holes for fence posts, installing underground sprinklers, and more.
Central Electric Cooperative wants to ensure members stay safe at all times. Calling 811 for locate services will protect you and your family. Please remember to request locates before digging with any equipment, as it is Oregon state law. If you damage CEC’s and or any other utility equipment without having locates completed, you are liable for the damage caused.
Once you have made your locate request, know its expiration date. If you plan on digging past the expiration date, please contact the Oregon Utility Notification Center at least two business days before your locates expire.
Locate requests can also be made online or through the mobile app through the Oregon Utility Notification Center. If you are new to locating utilities, you must register under the Utility tab, File a Locates Requests, and Register.
CEC uses professional contractors that do NOT allow the cooperative to locate any underground facilities for members. All members, digging or excavating, are required to contact 811 before proceeding.
Excavate Carefully
When digging within 2 feet of the located area, only use small hand tools or other non-invasive methods to determine the exact location of the underground facility. Remember, requirements have changed, and not all utilities are installed same. While some utilities have protective casings, others do not, and tools like a shovel can easily damage them. Always proceed with caution when digging around utility lines.
